Weird Creatures Discovered in the Deep Sea Vents of the Indian Ocean
They look like something straight out of a sci-fi horror movie. Strange creatures and even new species have been discovered living around the "Dragon Vent", an underwater area with intense hydrothermal activity. The expedition to survey the vents was led by Dr. Jon Copley, a University of Southampton marine biologist. Exploring in the RRS James Cook, they discovered new species of Yeti crabs, sea cucumbers, vent shrimps, and scaly-foot snails. In all they sampled seventeen different animals.
Copley is especially concerned about China doing deep sea mining in the area. Recently, China has been allowed by the UN International Seabed Authority to do prospecting in the area for possible copper, zinc, gold, uranium, and other minerals.
