Black Israelite Sues Prison for Shaving His Dreadlocks

Omar Grayson is a former inmate at the Big Muddy Correctional Center. During his time there, he alleged that Harold Schuler, a prison officer, forced him to shave his dreadlocks in violation of his religious rights. Grayson is a member of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, an religious group that believes Blacks are descended from one of the twelve tribes of ancient Jews. Grayson was unable to keep his hair because he wasn't a Rastafarian and it was also a security risk. For this violation, he sued the officer in federal court. Another concern is that it's easy for a long-haired inmate to change his appearance after he escapes from prison. But those were the issues Grayson were contending. It was the allegation that the hair style rule was applied in an unfair manner. The 7th Circuit court allowed his claim to remain in the judicial process.
